Beware demands for compost ‘service’

2016-02-02 06:00

Retreat residents have reportedly been threatened to pay R480 for a service they did not ask for.

This is according to councillor Kevin Southgate, councillor for ward 72.

Southgate says he has received calls from residents complaining about people dumping compost without permission.

According to the complainants the compost dumpers approach residents and says they are selling compost at R80 a barrel.

“They reportedly offload the compost without any agreement with the owners of the home and spread the compost over the lawn,” he says.

In one case a man agreed to one barrel of compost but after the compost was strewn over his lawn the people selling the compost demanded R480.

“The owner says the people do as they want without permission and then demand money. He even said they became aggressive when they did not get the amount they were demanding,” he says.

Southgate says people should report the compost seller.

“The people drive around in a bakkie with the compost and when the resident turns them away, they come back later and continue with their service without permission. This is unacceptable and residents are urged to report it to the police so that these people can be warned not to deliver a service for which no permission was given.”

A man who fell victim to this felt threatened by the criminals and so went on to pay them R400 for a service he had not requested. They came back the following day and demanded the “outstanding” R80.

“This is not how one does business,” the resident says.
