Biz robbery foiled by tip-off

2016-02-02 06:00

Three men, aged 21, 27 and 32, who seemed to be getting ready to rob a shop, were arrested on Thursday after police acted on a tip-off from the public.

Grassy Park police spokesperson Warrant Officer Wynita Kleinsmith says information was received about a suspicious car in Dane Street, Grassy Park.

“Police were busy with an integrated operation with other units when a member received information about a suspicious car – a white Opel Astra – standing in Dane Street. Members then proceeded to the car and found a man in the driver’s side of the car,” Kleinsmith says.

“Members found it very suspicious and called for backup. Upon driving in Victoria Road members were informed by a shop owner that two suspicious-looking men were in front of the shop. When they spotted the police vehicles they walked away. As members approached them they started to run. Members then pursued them on foot,” Kleinsmith says.

She adds police station commander Colonel Shawn van Wyk and Constable Kurt Oliphant, who were busy with bicycle patrols, helped the members in apprehending the two men.

“Upon searching them, police members found two firearms – a Norico and a Star 9mm. Both with magazines and nine rounds all together. Both firearms’ serial numbers had been filed off.”

The suspects, said to be from Khayelitsha, were arrested on charges of attempted business robbery, possession of unlicenced firearms, prohibited firearms and ammunition. Three cellphones and the “getaway” car were confiscated.
