Bringing the music home

2017-05-02 06:00

A Masiphumelele resident is making his voice heard – and giving others the chance to raise theirs.

Andile Thetha, known by his hip-hop moniker as Oscar or Da O, has applied for international funding to set up his own recording studio in Masiphumelele.

A self-proclaimed community activist, music producer and performer, Thetha has worked with the likes of Gabi le Roux and Mandoza.

He has been involved in facilitating the Masiphumelele wing of the eMzantsi intercultural music project for several years and runs a regular live platform for local artists called Masi Massive with the tagline “Peace, love and unity”, which invites artists from Masiphumelele, Ocean View and Fish Hoek.

Masi Massive events include live hip-hop performances bringing together a collective of rappers, poetry DJs and musicians.

The aim of the events, and the recording studio, is to mentor youngsters by encouraging their talent and to foster a community spirit based on love, peace and unity, Thetha explains.

The recording studio will be a way for Thetha to run youth workshops. He hopes to be able to hire it out to professionals, but is also looking to develop a local radio station.
