Over 100 performers from the The Waterfront College’s musical theatre department will be on stage at the Masque Theatre in Muizenberg this week in Broadway or Bust.

Conceived by Garth Tavares, Broadway or Bust is a musical theatre revue featuring a myriad of showstoppers from classical Broadway hits like Annie Get your Gun, Hair, Sweet Charity and Cats to more recent successes such as Jersey Boys, The Addams Family, 9 to 5 and Matilda.

“A revue is the ideal way to showcase the range of skills possessed by our student body,” explains college director Delia Sainsbury.

“The eclectic range of material featured in the show allows a more diverse demonstration of each individual’s unique talent.”

Delia adds that many of the extracts included in the show are stand-alone pieces that the audience will enjoy even if they aren’t familiar with the original context.

Garth points out that the show has taken six months to put together with students being actively involved in the creative process both on and off stage.

“From the painting of sets, to the making of puppets to the singing, dancing and acting – the students have truly seen the grit behind the glitz.”

Broadway or Bust is directed by Garth, who also does the musical direction and choreography. Costume designs are by Delia and decor is facilitated by Deon Bisschoff.

In addition to highlighting the best of the college’s musical theatre faculty, Broadway or Bust is a fundraising event for The Waterfront theatre College Bursary Fund which helps support young artists who may not have the resources to access further training.

All proceeds from the show go to funding a future generation of theatre practitioners.V Broadway or Bust will be on stage from Wednesday 24 August to Saturday 3 September with 14:30 matinee performances on Saturdays. Tickets cost R120 or R100 for students and pensioners from www.waterfronttheatreschool.co.za or tixsa.co.za.
