More than 50 matriculants from Mitchell’s Plain last week received bursaries for their studies.

Trevor Manuel, South African Minister in the Presidency and the founding patron of the Mitchell’s Plain Bursary and Role Model Trust, was the keynote speaker at the Annual Awards Ceremony held on Saturday.

At the ceremony, more than 50 deserving matriculants from the class of 2015, as well as students who started their tertiary education during or before the 2015 academic year, received bursaries toward their studies.

The ceremony was held at Glendale High School.

The event was also an early celebration of the Mitchell’s Plain Bursary and Role Model Trust’s fifth anniversary.

Since its launch on 16 June 2011, the Trust has been making steady progress in ensuring that young people from Mitchell’s Plain and surrounds have the opportunity to study at a university, the University of Technology or a college of their choice.

With the generous support of companies and individuals, the Trust disbursed, for the first time since its inception, approximately R1m to deserving recipients in the 2015 academic year, and is on track to improve on this investment in 2016.
