Businessman robbed at bank

2017-08-08 06:02

Athlone police are on the hunt for three men linked to an armed robbery in Surrey Estate last week.

According to Athlone police spokesperson Sergeant Zita Norman, a business owner of Surrey Estate left his business premises at 08:35.

He was travelling to an Absa bank to deposit money, but was robbed on arrival at the bank.

“As he approached the doors of the bank, a white Toyota Corolla stopped and three unknown men got out of the car and held a firearm against his head.

“They took his bag of money and jumped into the car and fled the scene. The victim opened fire and shot four shots at the car.

“The back windscreen and body of the white Toyota was damaged,” says Norman.

Around R200 000 in cash was stolen from the businessman.

Norman adds that no-one has been arrested.

“Colonel Mark Adonis is requesting anyone with information regarding this matter to come forward.

“He is also engaging with the neighbourhood watches to be vigilant whilst patrolling in their respective areas.

“Street and court committees, we appeal to you to be actively involved in the continuous fight against crime,” Norman adds.

Adonis is further appealing to the broader community to get involved in the reward system.

This system allows any adult member of the community to become proactively involved in the prevention of crime, Norman explains.

“ Crime and criminals can be reported and a reward could be received by the reporter,” she adds.

V Anyone with information on this robbery can call the police at Crime Stop on 0860 010 111. All information will be treated as highly confidential.
