There is a lot at stake this coming weekend at the Cape interprovincial figure skating championships, being a qualifying event for international selection.

The Ice Station at GrandWest will host 120 of the best skaters in the country from Friday to Sunday.

Western Province is the largest skating province and plans to enter 50 solo skaters as well as five synchronised skating teams. It hopes to retain the interprovincial title held for the past 17 years.

The competition comprises solo skating, which means one skater performing required elements on his own, including jumps and spins to music on the ice.

Synchronised skating comprises a team of 12 to 16 skaters who perform together in unison to music on the ice, performing a variety of lifts, circles, lines and wheels with intricate footwork at the same time.

Judges from all over South Africa will be officiating at this event, and there is an international selection meeting scheduled for straight after. At this meeting the participating skaters will be assessed for international participation and next year’s World Figure and Synchronised Skating Championships.

The individual skaters and teams are scored on a computerised marking system with instant playback facilities, and the judges make use of this to give the skater the best possible result when assessing their performance.

Skaters entering this event range from the very young (under 10 years) to senior men and women (where the average age is 22 years) as well as adult sections for skaters over 25.

Many former champions today earn a living by performing overseas with professional ice shows such as Disney on Ice, Holiday on Ice and the Russian Imperial Ice Stars, all of which have visited our shores.

The programme takes place on Friday from 13:00 to 18:00 and Saturday from 06:00 to noon, with the finals taking place on Sunday from 06:00 to 15:00.
