This year more than R15m will be invested in youth cafe’s.

This was announced as part of the department of social development’s Youth Month commemorations.

MEC for the department Albert Fritz also launched the “Express Yourself Youth Canvas” in Cape Town last week.

The Youth Canvas is a large art canvas measuring 2 meters in height and 5 meters wide.

Fritz was joined by youth interns working within the Department (Premiers Advancement of Youth project and EPWP interns), and youth from NGO partners.

At the launch, young people took the opportunity to paint, draw, write and pin photos on it, as an act of expression.

The Youth Canvas will also be available for the remainder of Youth Month and will be placed at various locations where young people frequent, such as malls, colleges and universities and other public spaces, across the province.

The Provincial Strategic Goals 2 aimed at improving education and opportunities for youth development, and the Provincial Youth Development Strategy sees a continued support of the 2.1m youth in the province.

The department has therefore allocated R15.6m to youth services for this financial year.

This will focus on rolling out innovative Youth Cafés.

In his address, Fritz revealed the Department would be launching the provinces seventh Youth Café in Groot Brak River (Mossel Bay), and relaunching the Mitchell’s Plain Youth Café at the end of the month. “This Youth Canvas will give voice to young people across the province, but it is our delivery of Youth Cafés and other services that’ll give them real opportunity and hope”, says Minister Fritz.
