Two alleged car thieves died in a crash on Eisleben Road.

Lentegeur police were patrolling on Thursday early evening when they spotted a suspicious-looking VW Polo with four people inside.

According to a police report, they attempted to stop the car. They gave chase when the Polo sped off down Eisleben Road.

The driver jumped a red traffic light on the corner of Silversands and Eisleben roads and his car collided with a courier bakkie, says police spokesperson Captain Ian Williams.

The driver of the Polo and one of the passengers died on the scene.

The two other passengers were taken to hospital for treatment.

There were three occupants in the bakkie and all received medical attention.

The Polo was found to have been stolen in the city centre.

V Anyone with information on the accident is urged to contact the investigating officer Detective Sergeant Vuyan Claasen on 021 370 1754.
