Cat lovers in Chapel Court fear for their cats because of the neighbour’s dogs that allegedly kill them.

Residents claim they used to sit outside and admire each other’s cats as they ran around but all that doesn’t happen anymore because most of the cats are dead.

They are claiming that a neighbour who owns two dogs has brought this misery unto them. Since last year about a dozen cats have died and others have mysteriously disappeared.

Afiesa Dudley says she vividly remembers 6 August last year when her one-year-old cat Sandy was killed in front of her eyes by this man’s dog.

“This is a day I will never forget. I don’t know why I was outside early that morning, but I will never forget what I saw. One of his dogs had my little baby (cat) in the mouth. I watched helplessly as my cat was torn apart by his dog. It was dangling like a rag doll. It broke my heart.

“I begged him to stop the dog but he didn’t. Instead he ran to me instead of saving my cat. He was such a respected man and to do this to my cat was very bad.”

Dudley says following the incident of her cat she had to keep a close eye on her neighbour. She saw him on several occasions throwing cats in his wheelie bin. “No one can approach him because he is so rude and thinks he is Mr Right. We won’t let this lay down, we want justice for the cats.”

It is alleged that over a period of nine months various cats have disappeared or died.

Shanaaz Williams says their 13-year-old cat Petches just vanished without a trace and they suspect it was killed by the dogs.

“We don’t know what happened to Petches. We don’t believe that she just never came home. The dogs must have killed our cat. He has a pit bull terrier and we know that dog is aggressive by nature; it might have attacked the other cats.”

Ever since the cats have vanished people have been open about it and they say people have come forward and they signed a petition.

The man whose dogs are accused of killing the cats, was unavailable for comment.

Belinda Abraham, communications, education and resource development manager of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA) says they are aware of this incident.

“We received the complaint and investigated the matter on Tuesday 15 March. An inspector was despatched to the home of the owner of the dogs and a full inspection was conducted. We found no contraventions in terms of the Animal Protection Act (APA). Whilst we do by no means condone the alleged actions of the owner’s dogs, we witnessed no cruelty to animals during our inspection.”

It is an offence for an owner to incite an animal to attack another, but documented evidence of these allegations would be required to enable a successful prosecution, Abraham says.

“Owners are required to be in control of their animals at all times unless they are in areas that specifically indicate that animals are allowed to go off-leash. These rules are documented in the City’s bylaws.”
