Children’s shelter needs funds

2016-03-29 06:00

A local organisation which cares for abused children in Mitchell’s Plain is asking for the public’s help because it can’t cover its monthly expenses.

Solomons Haven, an NPO, works with physically and sexually abused children placed in its care by the court or through an emergency placement order.

The children usually arrive with only the clothes on their backs and with little or no background information available.

The children then need to be clothed, fed and seen to by a doctor.

The shelter also runs a community soup kitchen that feeds about 150 people twice a week.

Solomons Haven has been operating in Mitchell’s Plain for the past 20 years and houses up to 20 children at a time.

Its only income is donations from individuals and businesses.

Solomons Haven is currently in debt as bills go unpaid while funds are diverted towards improving the well-being of the children.

Solomons Haven was founded by Maria Solomons in 1992, with the support of her husband, Alec, and her children they took it upon themselves to open their hearts and doors to vulnerable children.

Some of the needs include a property to house the shelter, clothing, shoes, blankets, toys and games, toiletries, food and school stationery.

V For more information or if you would like to get involved with the shelter call 021 372 1293 or 083 741 6466 or email solomonshaven@yahoo.com
