Clinic stays closed into the new year

The City of Cape Town’s health directorate has decided to keep the doors of the Hanover Park Clinic closed until the end of January next year.

The directorate was forced to close the Clinic on 5 November amid an upsurge in gang violence in the area. Staff members had to be relocated to the Newfields satellite clinic on the outskirts of Hanover Park.

An assessment will be done at the end of January to determine the way forward.

In the interim, patients can go to Newfields.

Mayoral committee member for health Siyabulela Mamkeli says the situation is not ideal.

“We are looking at ways to address the space constraints at the satellite clinic to allow for the basic minimum services to be provided in an environment conducive to service delivery. We are investigating the option of a container and some minor building alterations, but we are still trying to secure funding,” Mamkeli says.

In addition, staff members will continue to receive counselling for the psychological trauma that they have endured, while a request has been made to the City’s law enforcement department to conduct regular patrols at both the Hanover Park Clinic site and the Newfields satellite clinic site.

“Once again I would like to apologise to the affected patients for the inconvenience but ultimately it has to be a case of safety first. Our staff members have been very unsettled by the violence in the area and that has impacted on their ability to deliver quality services,” adds Mamkeli.
