The members of Strandfontein AFC are hosting a winter drive for the club’s needy neighbours.

The club’s management is calling on members of the public who are able to donate blankets and non-perishable food to the cause to help them get to their target of 50 parcels of groceries by the end of the month.

Shiehaam Ahmed, club secretary, says they hope to make this winter drive a success and to repeat it as an annual initiative.

“We are a community soccer club and an NPO and we also want to try and give back to our less fortunate neighbours who live in the informal settlements very close to us, especially in the winter months. It’s very cold and we would like to make just a little difference in their lives,” she says.

While their target is to make up 50 grocery parcels and collect 50 blankets, Ahmed says exceeding this target would be welcomed.

“If we can make more parcels and collect more blankets, that would be awesome,” she says. “This is not only open to club members – anyone can donate to this worthy cause. We would love for as many people from all over to get involved as possible.”

There are currently two drop-off points.

Residents can take goods to 30 Pilot Way, Strandfontein or 12 Berlin Square, Strandfontein.

“This is the club’s first drive and we would like to make it successful and an annual initiative,” says Ahmed.

The parcels will be donated to people living in 7de Laan and Oppermans Oord informal settlements and elsewhere.

Some of the items the club members hope to collect is 1kg bags of rice, 500g packets of sugar, 1F boxes of long-life milk, coffee, tea, 750ml bottles oil, peanut butter, jam, baked beans, salt, bath soap, toothpaste, Sunlight soap bars, onions, potatoes, peas, lentils, mealie meal, two-minute noodles and blankets.

The handover will take place between this month and July.
