Cape Town Stadium was awash with colour when it played host to the second leg of the HSBC Sevens World Series over the weekend.

In the end, England walked away with the spoils, beating tournament hosts and defending champions the Blitzbokke 19-17 in a tense final which had the capacity crowd of almost 55 000 on its feet.

Although the ending was not a desired one for the partisan crowd, the event was seen as a success, with a total of 108 941 spectators over the two days.

The City of Cape Town announced last week that it has approved an agreement that will see Cape Town hosting the HSBC Cape Town Sevens tournament for the next three years.

Last year, more than 106 000 attended the inaugural event which translated into an estimated R539m economic injection for the city.

Last year, 34% of the spectators came from Cape Town, 21% from the Western Cape outside the city, 22% from the rest of South Africa and 23% from other countries to enjoy the rugby and the city.
