Convincing score in netball league

2017-07-18 06:00

Goldhill 1 cemented their position at the top of the Mitchell’s Plain netball union’s super A league by convincingly beating Weltevrede 25-13 at the Stephen Reagon sport complex on Saturday.

The “Green Machine” players were dominant throughout the game and handled the ball better in the rainy conditions. The youthful Weltevrede team persisted with wide play and increasing the pace of the game which, with the slippery underfoot conditions, were ineffective to challenge Jill Dickenson, goalkeeper of Goldhill.

Goal shooter for Weltevrede Alison Gabriels lived off scraps but produced seven goals for her team in the first two quarters of the game. She was supported by Elanor Philander who stood out.

The Mitchell’s Plain team’s fearlessness to attack impressed coach Igshaan Brenner.

“We’re a young side and building for the future but came up against a very experienced Goldhill today,” he said.

Goldhill 1 showed its experience as seasoned campaigners by alternating the play between long balls in attack and slowing down the game, with Celestine Damon prominent in executing their game plans. She often took the heat off a closely marked Renske Burg and contributed with eight goals.

However, the day belonged to Burg who had a 90% scoring success rate. Her positional play in the goal area allowed her teammates to feed her long balls from the middle of the park, which she used to her advantage to contribute 17 goals.
