Cops seize a dozen guns

A number of guns, drugs and ammunition was confiscated in the Mitchell’s Plain policing precinct from Tuesday to Sunday in ten unrelated incidents.

A total of 14 men were arrested in connection with these incidents.

In the most recent case, at 16:15 on Sunday, police were called to a shooting scene in Kanonkop Street, Tafelsig.

When officers arrived, they saw a man standing in the yard, who then ran as they approached.

They caught and searched him and found a silver Rossi .38 Special revolver covered in tape with two live rounds, three empty cartridges in the barrel and seven additional rounds in a sock.

The 24-year-old man was arrested.

Police arrested a 19-year-old man in connection with a shooting in Mountain Road, Tafelsig on Sunday morning.

Officers were busy with crime prevention duties at 09:30 when they received information on a shooting.

On arrival a suspect was seen running. When police stopped and searched the man they found a firearm with the serial number filed off and five rounds of ammunition.

Earlier on Sunday morning officers stopped and searched a man in Hexrivier Road, Tafelsig and found a Smith and Wesson Springfield gas gun and a knife in his possession.

The 33-year-old man was arrested.

In another case, three men – aged 18, 21 and 22 – were arrested on Saturday at 16:30 when police were called to Portlands sports field. As officers approached the suspects they moved away from the spot where the police noticed a toiletry bag.

Police searched the bag and found a black CCP firearm with a magazine and eight live rounds.

A 25-year-old man was arrested in Mopanie Street, Eastridge on Saturday at noon when police saw him running down the street. The man was caught and searched and the officers found an Astra .38 Special firearm and five bullets on him.

A 32-year-old man was arrested in Madison Street, Beacon Valley on Friday at noon. Officers were on patrol when they saw him running from them when they approached him. They caught and searched the man and found 13 bullets in his ­possession.

A further three men, aged 45, 58 and 59, were arrested in Mountain Road on Thursday for being in possession of a hand ­grenade.

Police were alerted to the grenade by a ­tip-off.

Officers of Khayelitsha Police Station were on patrol in Tafelsig on Wednesday at 01:15 when they received information about drugs.

Police found a plastic bag with 1000 mandrax tablets and a Z88 9mm Parabellum pistol with a magazine and 15 bullets.

A 34-year-old man was arrested.

Officers were on patrol in Bering Road, Rocklands on Wednesday at 07:30 when they stopped and searched a suspicious-looking man.

They found a black imitation firearm and arrested the 21-year-old man.

A 24-year-old man was also arrested in Sourfig Street, Eastridge on Tuesday at 17:00.

Officers were on patrol and stopped the man. They found a black imitation firearm in his possession and he was arrested.

All the arrested men have since appeared in court on related charges.
