Organisers of the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon will aim to take another step forward this year in their attempt to close the gap on the world’s biggest road running events.

Set to be held for the third time since its relaunch in 2014, the annual 42km race takes place in the picturesque Mother City on Sunday 18 September, and retains IAAF Silver Label status.

As the only standard marathon race in Africa to be awarded Silver Label status, the Cape Town Marathon will continue to target Gold Label recognition. “We are very pleased with the progress we have made over the last two years, and we are satisfied that we made further advances by hosting another successful event last year. We have a vision and will continue to focus on that by making the required adjustments to ensure we are delivering a world-class event across the board. This will assist in ensuring South African runners have access to a world-class running event organised by globally accredited standards, while offering incentives and mentoring for local runners,” says Elana Meyer, race ambassador and former Olympic silver medallist.

Taking the next step towards their long-term goals, organisers aim to offer an enhanced runner and spectator experience at the 2016 race. By providing spectator buses and zones, as well as a wide range of entertainment, the organisers again intend to involve local communities in the festivities around the event. The weekend Spring road running festival will also continue to empower and reward local road running talent.

The tremendous local and international support for the 2015 event, which boasted one of the largest road race fields in the country, offers a clear indication of the impact the race has already made since it was launched. “The increase in popularity of this event over a short two-year period shows the value it can offer people throughout Africa as a leading brand which promotes healthy living. The economic boost delivered by the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon through various local industries, including travel and tourism, continues to make a valuable contribution outside the world of sport. This shows the true value of the race,” says Garreth Bloor, Mayco member for economic development and tourism.

The Sanlam Cape Town Marathon brings together elite competitors, social runners and local communities, and is proving to be a top choice for elite athletes as well as fitness-loving celebrities.

Organisers are again calling on runners of all abilities to #challengeyourself and #challengeyourfriend by participating in the annual endurance event on a flat and fast course which is ideal for experienced and beginner athletes.Legacy athletes, including Elana Meyer, have pledged their support for the event, which offers lucrative incentives for top performances, as the race builds on South Africa’s running culture and extends the nation’s rich history in hosting world-class running events.

The weekend festival, held over two days with the marathon race taking centre stage on the Sunday, will again consist of a marathon, 10km Peace Run/Walk, 4.2km Fun Run and Peace Trail Runs.
