Cutting school fears

2017-05-23 06:00

Are there parents putting their children’s education at risk?

That is what a concerned Lotus River parent wants to know because she sees too many children out on the streets during school times.

Anita van Niekerk says that she is worried about all the children of school going age on the streets when she is driving around the area.

“While I see these children in my neighbourhood it also seems to be a problem in many surrounding areas as well. I’ve noticed it for a few years now but I thought it is about time that it is brought to the public, and especially educational authorities, attention. The biggest worry for me is what seems to be younger children that should be in pre or primary school that seem to be playing in front of their homes. Are their parents caring about their education?”

Van Niekerk adds that unemployment and poverty could be playing a part but feels that if there are problems the education departments must become more involved. “Many of us grew up in poverty but we had parents who made sure that we got our education,” she says.

“Society has changed but we must not lose sight of the value of education no matter your circumstances. If we allow this truancy to continue it is only going to lead to more problems in the future.”

At the time of going to press the Western Cape Education Department had not responded to what processes are in place for this problem.
