Defrauded investors urged to speak out

Mitchell’s Plain residents who may have fallen victim to an alleged con-man have been urged to contact police.

In 2013, police opened an investigation into complaints of alleged fraud against Ebrahim Abrahams, owner of Summear Investments. Police confirm a charge was laid at the station in 2013 by someone on behalf of the Cape Town Community Housing Company as it was alleged that Summear Investments was selling houses under the umbrella of Cape Town Community Housing.

Several complaints against Summear Investments have been lodged at Mitchell’s Plain Police Station as the company failed to deliver on its promises to deliver low-cost housing (People’s Post, 31 July 2014).

Abrahams appeared in the Mitchell’s Plain Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday 15 March on a charge of fraud.

Police spokesperson Lieutenant Ian Williams says the case has been postponed to Monday 11 April for his bail hearing.

“Abrahams has been arrested on a charge of fraud. It is alleged that he ‘sold’ low cost housing to people and asked for deposits of R5000, but never supplied the houses. If you have invested or paid a deposit for low cost housing with Abrahams or Summear Investments, urgently contact the investigating officer, Detective Sergeant Lewis,” says Williams.

One of the victims on People’s Post’s record is an unemployed Tafelsig woman who paid R5000 after she was promised a house in Woodridge, but soon realised the housing development was a scam (“Desperate investors wait for homes”, People’s Post, 15 May 2013).

V Call investigating officer Detective Sergeant Lewis on 021 370 2820 or 072 959 9293.
