Do right on the roads

2017-05-30 06:01

Have you ever taken note of the absolute inconsideration and disrespect drivers show for each other in parking areas and on the roads?

A perfect example would be the way people park at malls and hospitals. They simply fail to park in the centre of bays or park totally skew, which then results in other cars having to park skew as well or stand a chance of having their car damaged.

Then let us not forget the all-time favourite: Blocking intersections.

We know that green means go, but why do they go when they can see they are going to block an intersection.

As said, the intersection is blocked already but cars taking the corner or driving in the opposite direction at the intersection still barrel into the intersection, thus creating a driving irritation.

You can experience this every weekday on Klipfontein Road (as well as intersections across the peninsula) and there is never a traffic cop in sight to direct traffic.

This is why I miss Pretoria and Johannesburg where you saw these officials on the road daily to direct traffic and keep traffic flowing.

Doesn’t the traffic department in Cape Town have such agreements with insurance companies?

I was outraged when it took me more than an hour to travel a distance of less than 5km, from the traffic light opposite Kewtown on Klipfontein Road (near Riverside Primary School) to the M5 off-ramp on Klipfontein Road.

It would take me that time to travel from Heuweloord (outskirts of Pretoria) to Rivonia or Roodepoort (the latter 65km away).

In Cape Town it seems as if the road engineers and construction workers are on a permanent go slow or just plain incompetent in some areas.

In the three years since I have been in Cape Town, the road construction on Strandfontein Road has yet to be completed. Or are these areas not deemed as important as road widening appears to take place quickly in some other areas.

What the road department fails to comprehend: This incomplete construction is placing motorists at risk, especially at night, at the intersection with the looming cement structures on the road where you could easily be cornered in smash-and-grab or hijacking incidences.
