Rondebosch police are warning taxi commuters to avoid getting into minibus taxis that have no other passengers.

According to Rondebosch police spokesperson Warrant Officer Lyndon Sisam, this follows three incidents of kidnapping that have taken place since Tuesday 29 August.

Women have been the victims in all three incidents.

Two of the kidnappings occurred in Observatory and the other one in Rondebosch.

Sisam says police are currently investigating different cases of kidnapping and are looking for two men, a driver of a white minibus taxi and his assistant.

He says the most recent incident happened on Thursday 7 September. Three women were allegedly kidnapped by two men in a minibus taxi.

“Two men – the taxi driver and his fee collector travelling in a white minibus taxi – accosted the unsuspecting female passengers when inside the minibus taxi.

“All three were pushed onto the floor after their heads were covered with a cloth or bag,” Sisam says.

“The men then get the passenger to call their next-of-kin and then demand a ransom of R5000 to be deposited via eWallet for their release.

“The three females have since been safely released unharmed.

“Police are investigating.”

He says the families of two women managed to pay the money.

The third victim was later let free after her family delayed in making the payment.
