Don’t skip the open street

2017-03-07 06:01

You won’t want to miss the second Open Streets Day as plans for the free family fun day start to fall in place.

The route has now been confirmed and a 1.4km stretch of Eisleben Road between Wespoort Drive and Spine Road will be shut down for the car-free celebration in the streets.

Entrance is free and families and friends are urged to come and join in on the fun in the sun with lots of entertainment on offer, including painting and free bicycle lessons for children.

The road will be closed between 11:00 and 17:30 with the organisers welcoming bicycles, roller blades and thousands of pairs of feet from noon to 17:00.

No motorised vehicles will be allowed and no alcohol or illegal substances will be allowed either. Other than attending the family and community day, you can get involved by sharing an activity or becoming a volunteer or food vendor.

“We are really excited to see the potential of re-imagining a street such as Eisleben Road,” says Rebecca Campbell of Open Streets.

“As usual this is a very organic process in the sense that we don’t approach specific people to take part. After putting out the word that it’s happening, we have been contacted by a wide array of groups. Some of them have been coming to other Open Streets days and many are based in Mitchell’s Plain.”
