‘Drag racing’ driver collides with bus

2016-08-23 06:00

A man has died in an accident involving a bus in Tafelsig on Wednesday.

On Wednesday 17 August at 18:30 police were called to the scene of an accident in AZ Berman Drive between Langeberg and Bokkeveld streets.

“On arrival, police saw that a white Ford Sapphire had collided with the back of a Golden Arrow bus,” says police spokesperson Captain Ian Williams.

It is believed that two cars had been drag racing at the time of the accident.

“(It is alleged) two cars were seen drag racing in the street when they attempted to overtake a bus,” confirms Williams.

“The bus was on its route. The one overtook the bus while the other car attempting to pass the bus collided with it, ending up under the rear of the bus.”

The driver of the car was declared dead on the scene. There were no other injuries in the accident.

The other car fled the scene. Williams confirms detectives do not suspect the bus driver to be at fault for the accident.

As per procedure, the bus driver has been suspended pending a routine internal investigation, Williams says.

Golden Arrow had not responded at the time of going to print.

V Anyone with information about the unknown vehicle or driver is asked to contact investigating officer Detective Constable Jonathan Jacobs on 064 479 3038 or 021 370 1754.
