A motorist who tried to escape the clutches of traffic officers in Cape Town got more than he bargained for when officers chased him down.

According to a report by Mayco member for safety and security, JP Smith, the man abandoned his car on Jakes Gerwel Drive on Tuesday morning (9 May) as officers were carrying out Operation Reclaim aimed at tackling motorists with outstanding warrants of arrest for traffic and other offences.

The man reportedly abandoned his silver Toyota Avanza on the side of Jakes Gerwel Drive and fled southbound before ducking through the palisade fence into Samora Machel.

Smith says: “We've just had our first 'runner’ who attempted to flee the scene after he was stopped. Four officers pursued him as he fled into the homes. One officer fell during the arrest and tore his uniform. The fleeing driver was arrested and will have a further charge added. His abandoned vehicle will be impounded”.
