Drug clampdown nets 210 in a week

2016-04-12 06:00

The Mitchell’s Plain Cluster continued clamping down on crime and criminal activities in its eight stations.

Last week 210 suspects were arrested for possession of drugs during stop and searches and 78 houses were searched for drugs.

During these operations over a kilogram of dagga, 802 mandrax tables, 278 grams of tik and 447 grams of heroin were confiscated.

Perpetrators of domestic violence had nowhere to hide as 15 suspects were arrested for domestic-violence related cases.

Liquor outlets and shebeen operations also took priority in order to prevent drugs and alcohol abuse – especially in more disadvantaged communities that often suffer assault, child abuse and domestic violence.

Twelve shebeen houses were searched and 18 second goods premises were also searched.

Wanted suspects tracing operations resulted in 37 arrests. Police visited spaza shops, mostly owned by foreign nationals, to ensure safety and help prevent business robberies and xenophobic attacks. Seven firearms were confiscated and six suspects were arrested facing charges of possession of illegal firearms.

Other suspects were arrested for crimes committed ranging from house break-ins and theft, theft of motor vehicles, possession of stolen property, robbery, drunken driving, murder, possession of dangerous weapons and traffic violations.

Police management commended the members for a job well done and warned criminals will be brought to book.
