‘Drug dealer’ chokes on drugs

A Wynberg resident suspected of dealing in drugs died from choking after he swallowed a condom with drugs to evade police.

Wynberg police spokesperson Captain Ntomboxolo Nqunqeka says three police officers were doing regular patrols in Lester Road, Wynberg on Tuesday 1 November when they spotted a known drug dealer.

“One of the police officers gave chase and further down the road the guy turned and grabbed the policeman by his chest and that resulted in a scuffle. The officer noticed that the guy was choking on a pink object which the person might have swallowed. The guy collapsed,” she says.

The officers took him to Victoria Hospital in Wynberg where the medical staff “managed to resuscitate him and removed a condom containing possible drugs from his airway.”

“Later on that day a group of 25 aggressive men demanded to see the police officer who ‘assaulted’ their friend and threatened to kill him. They were handled by the visible policing coordinator Captain Malcom Jacobs and left.”

The suspected drug dealer was stabilised and later transferred to Groote Schuur Hospital for an operation to remove two more objects in his stomach, also suspected to be drug packets, but the man died four days later.
