After they lost everything in a fire, an early childhood development centre (ECD) based in Eastridge had to start from scratch.

The Spine Educare attached to the Eastridge Baptist Church in Fox Street was hit by tragedy when a fire engulfed the church in the early hours of Monday 14 March (“Church, crèche ruined”, People’s Post, 22 March).

It is believed men broke into the church and stole several items.

Following the burglary, the police were alerted to a fire that had engulfed the church.

The fire destroyed the entire church and all its contents. With this it also destroyed the adjoining ECD centre.

The centre cared for 100 childre – from Khayelitsha and area surrounding the church in Eastridge – in two classrooms before the blaze. They dad spent money on new equipment just before the fire.

Some of the damage includes the loss of educational materials, seating and musical instruments.

At the time, Pastor Bennie Dreyer estimated the cost of the damages to be at least R2m.

Dreyer added the church hired two containers to assist the educare while repair work was being done to the church building.

Dreyer said the needs include educational materials, books, puzzles, toys, mats, sleeping mattresses, children’s chairs and tables, chairs for the church, instruments and decor.

Last week the portfolio chairperson for social development and early childhood development, Raelene Arendse, together with ward 79 councillor Solomon Philander and ward 99 councillor Maria Weavers, answered the call to donate to the educare. The councillors handed a gesture of support to the educare on Monday 16 May, which included educational toys and materials to assist the educare in rebuilding their losses.
