Daydreams and fanciful characters will be brought to life when the Masque Players present The Extraordinary Revelations of Orca the Goldfish at the Masque Theatre in Muizenberg this week.

Written by David Tristram, this one act comedy takes a close look at a relationship that has gone completely stale. Alice (played by Julie Summers) and Henry (played by James Skilton) no longer know how to communicate with each other. Instead, they daydream and fantasize about different lives for themselves.

As their story unravels, Henry becomes any character his heart desires – an actor, raconteur, sporting hero, business tycoon, secret agent, Casanova and even the President of the United States. Throughout all of the chaos, their goldfish Orca silently observes everything around him.

The Extraordinary Revelations of Orca the Goldfish is brought to life under the direction of Nigel Sweet, who performed the play back in 1995 at the Milnerton Playhouse and is excited about bringing a fresh production to the Masque Theatre.

Having been in the play himself, Sweet understands that it requires strong actors who can switch seamlessly between characters. Julie Summers (known for her role of Spud’s Mom in the Spud films) and James Skilton (a regular on the Masque stage) are more than equal to this challenge.

The pair skilfully take the audience through a maze of amusing and entertaining cameos as their characters take on different personas – 10 each throughout the play. V The Extraordinary Revelations of Orca the Goldfish opens on Thursday 14 April and runs Thursdays to Saturdays until Saturday 23 April with a 15:30 matinee performance on Saturday 16 April. Tickets cost R60. Call 021 788 1898 (weekday from 09:00 to 16:00 and Saturdays until 12:00) or email bookings@masquetheatre.co.za to book.
