A local high school in Grassy Park was paid a visit by local police last week in the fight against crime.

Grassy Park police spokesperson Warrant Officer Wynita Kleinsmith says the school was visited on Wednesday 24 August at about 08:00 with sector managers, social crime prevention officers, Metro Police K9 Unit.

“This operation came about after the principal of this school sent a letter to Grassy Park police requesting a search. Learners were searched by police officers and with the help of Metro Police with three K9 Unit dogs, the premises and bags were searched,” Kleinsmith says.

Kleinsmith says teachers welcomed the intervention as they have to deal with kids who smoke (on school premises) “and dealing with drugs at the school.”

“Police officers created awareness by addressing safety, discipline and (learners) were discouraged from joining gangs and using drugs ,” she says.

During this operation, police confiscated cigarettes, lighters, a toy firearm, knifes and dagga. All these items were handed in at the police station.

“Strong partnerships and a better relationship with schools and pupils is being built which contributes to the fight against crime. No (other) illegal substances was found during the search,” Kleinsmith confirms.
