Find the heart

2017-05-09 06:00

A group of Kalk Bay residents are looking to celebrate the history of the fishing village by establishing a museum and art centre.

The project, dubbed the Heart of Kalk Bay, aims to create a local and tourist attraction which will acknowledge the culture of the community and develop skills, says the project’s Donald Barnett.

“It is paramount to keep the unique fishing tradition of Kalk Bay in our hearts and as part of the fabric of South Africa.

“It will assist the new generation who currently live in Kalk Bay to be a part of their elders’ local fisherman’s tradition, whilst still integrating them into an ever-changing economy,” he says.

“By combining the art centre with a museum, based on the Kalk Bay history and old fisherman stories, a unique opportunity is created for telling the story of life at sea in False Bay and the history of Kalk Bay through the fisherman’s eye.”

The project aims to stay “proudly local” and work with residents to create something that suits their wants and needs.

“Kalk Bay community is largely dependent on the fishing industry. With the current dwindling sea resources, an art or craft training opportunity creates an alternative prospect of how the locals could make money.

“Through education and training, there is potential to lower the rate of poachers,” says Barnett.

All of this would be combined with a working art gallery, displaying local artists’ work.

The residents behind the project are currently gathering funding and calling for interested parties to get involved – either by donating time and funds or sharing their stories of Kalk Bay.

Although a site has yet to be decided for the museum, the project organisers are looking at historical buildings in the area or at space in the harbour.
