‘Fine detective work’

Muizenberg police say they will not tolerate the false reporting of criminal cases. This was the message after a 40-year-old suspect was arrested for committing perjury.

On Thursday 15 September the suspect reported a case of theft out of motor vehicle, which allegedly occurred on Wednesday 14 September.

Muizenberg police spokesperson Captain Stephen Knapp says it was alleged that he parked his light delivery van in Beach Road, Muizenberg, and on returning to the vehicle at 15:00, he noted that the vehicle had been broken into.

“It was further alleged that goods to the value of more than R100 000 were stolen from the vehicle.”

After an initial investigation, the investigating officer, Constable Patrick Mdokwana, became suspicious and reinterviewed the suspect on Friday 16 September. During his investigation, the investigating officer viewed various LPR cameras in the city, where the vehicle was noticed in Kromboom Road during the time that the vehicle was supposedly parked and broken into, he says.

The suspect was arrested on Friday 16 September at 21:00 on charges of perjury. He appeared in the Muizenberg Magistrate’s Court on Monday 19 September and the case has been remanded to Friday 21 October.

Station commander Colonel Ismail Daniels congratulated the detective on his fine investigative work and states that false reporting of criminal cases does not give a true reflection of the crime trends in the precinct and hampers policing in the area.
