An Athlone man has recounted the steps taken by Jesus Christ after walking with a cross on his back through the streets of Athlone, ending up in Claremont.

Lawrence Matji (55) came to Cape Town in 2007 after the job he had at the time required him to relocate from his Kroonstad home. However, since leaving his job, Matji pursued his heart’s desire, which was to commit himself to the work of the Lord.

“I have committed myself to go and get the Christian books at the Frontline Fellowship in Rondebosch. I get Christian books from America and distribute them.”

Matji distributes this material to police stations, hospitals as well as various places of worship and that the material he distributes is also free.

This Easter was the second time that Matji undertook his walk and added that he has learnt from his last one, which he conducted last year. “I walked to (Cape) Town and I slept over at the Roman Catholic Church there. The Saturday morning I walked to the Green Point Boulevard and in front of the sea with the cross. On Sunday, obviously I had to come back, and I had to carry the cross.”

Matji is not bothered by the attention he receives when he is walking with the cross and instead he hopes that it serves as a reminder to those who identify with his faith.

“If I am walking with the cross, then I don’t think that I even have to be saying a word because people should know that this is a remembrance of the time the Lord had to be on that cross for us.”

He says he also uses the time to hand out CDs and DVDs, but he admits that although the road he takes is a lonely one, he would not mind having a little bit of help along the way.

Although a novel initiative, Matji says he stumbled across the idea. “As I was getting the literature from Frontline Fellowship I came across a DVD. The DVD was titled ‘The Cross’. This was a man from somewhere in Australia who had that idea of walking with a cross.”
