Heideveld locals hoping to keep fit will now have access to a gym yard at the Cathkin Community Centre.

The gym was completed last week after all the equipment was installed after three weeks of labour.

Anthony Moses, ward 44 councillor, hopes that the new instalment will encourage and foster a healthier Heideveld while also creating an environment to strengthen bonds within the community.

“The idea of the gym is that it is part of the recreational upgrade of the Cathkin Community Centre. What we are simply meaning by recreation is that there are a number of activities for the youth and adults in our area in order to promote sports and recreation,” he explains.

“The one thing is that we value the recreational part of our community, especially the youth in order to promote a healthier lifestyle.

“We see that the current change in society that there is a huge lack of physical activity and get involved in other forms of activity and gives them less time to exercise.”

Some of the equipment available in the outdoor gym includes a bench for strength training, endurance training and movement.

Moses explains the gym focuses on those who may not have the time to go to a gym as well as those who would like to gym, but cannot afford to join a gym due to the fees.

“What we have done is to bring the gym into the community. The gym is finished, all instruments have been installed. The foundations for the implements were laid three weeks ago and when I checked it last night (Thursday), all the instruments were installed. The gym is up and running.”

The gym will be operating throughout the day and will be available for residents of all walks of life.

“The operational hours will obviously be from your normal recreational hours. For those who come in the morning, it is obviously for the different groups who use the facility, our taibo group and fitness groups, which means that it is for Moms and Dads who are at home.

“Then in the afternoon after the normal school hours, then it becomes available for the youngsters who come from school. Then in the evening for soccer clubs and those people who make use of the facility can also make use of it.”
