The newly upgraded library at Groote Schuur Primary School in Rondebosch is aimed at encouraging learners to read more.

The library was officially opened on Thursday 14 September as part of International Library Day celebrations. Unlike before, the library is now brightly painted, the shelves have been touched up to be more interesting, a colourful couch with cushions has been placed in the centre of the library to allow learners to relax and hold group discussions, and the computer section has also undergone an upgrade.

The celebrations included guest speakers and activities. Parents and community members were invited to come and witness the unveiling and launch and be informed of how they can get involved and be part of the improvement.

It is now more child friendly, with its bright colours and relaxing atmosphere. Librarian Susan Charley says: “We realised that the old library was no longer child friendly and decided to give it an upgrade because we want to re-instil the importance of reading in our learners. We hope to encourage them to read more instead of playing games and browsing the internet.”

She says the library caters to around 230 learners from Grade R to Grade 7, all of whom are also excited about the colourful space. She encourages them to appreciate and make use of it. She says it is a privilege for them to be in a school that is equipped and striving to give them a better education by creating a learner-friendly, technology-wise environment.

She also encourages parents to promote reading at home and be involved in their children’s school work.

The school principal, Valentine Nefdt, adds: “The new library now boasts significant technological upgrades, which we hope will contribute towards the library becoming a space not just of learning but having fun too. It is hoped that the new space will help recapture the imaginations of young minds while continuing to emphasise the importance of reading.”

On the day, former Miss South Africa, Amy Kleinhans, was one of the invited guests and she read to the Grade 4 learners. She was joined by other prominent individuals including DJ Ready D, rugby star Scarra Ntubeni, and comedian Devon “devdondidit” Saunders who took to the stage to share a vital narrative on the importance of reading. He encouraged the learners to “get stuck into books because they can take you far.”
