Gearing for busy season

2016-12-20 06:01

Public safety patrollers contracted to the Muizenberg Improvement District (MID) are gearing up for a busy festive season.

Teuns Schamrel, owner of Grit, says crime in public spaces tends to spike over the festive season when people are enjoying the beach and strolling in the street.

“When you’re in a relaxed holiday mood, you’re often less alert and this is when opportunistic crime like pickpocketing, car break-ins and bag snatching surges. We welcome the MID decision to boost foot and bicycle patrols over the holidays and my team will be on the alert day and night.

Toby Megaw, MID director for public safety, says that even though patrols by the MID public safety officials and MCSI neighbourhood watch act as a visible deterrent to crime, it remains essential that anyone who is a victim of crime reports it at the police station next to Muizenberg Park.

“Police can only investigate if the crime has been reported and a statement has been made. Reporting crime helps build more accurate crime stats for our area and it gives an indication of hot spots and trends in the way criminals operate. This helps the police, law enforcement and all of us involved in crime prevention, to focus our efforts effectively.”
