With the u.18 Coca-Cola Craven Week kicking off on Saturday 11 July, trials for all the provinces are well under way.

Western Province recently had their final round of trials after a gruelling few weeks trying to find the best players for the final squad to travel to Kearsney College. For Mike Mavovana, this is the opportunity he has been waiting for since he started playing the game as a young boy.

This Rondebosch Boys’ High School (RBHS) fullback is both humbled and grateful for the opportunity to represent his province at the highest level of rugby while at school. He admits that this would be a dream come true, and that it could be the start of what he hopes will be a long career in rugby.

“My goals are to try make the Coca-Cola Craven Week side at either wing or fullback this year, then I’d like the opportunity to be enrolled at the Western Province Institute and play for the DHL Western Province u.19 team,” he says.

Although he is not the biggest player on the field, Mavovana uses his lightning speed and superior skills to his advantage. He clocked in a personal best 100m sprint 10.6 seconds.

Despite the promise of taking his rugby to the next level by playing in a provincial team, he has not lost focus of his school responsibilities at RBHS.

“At the moment my focus is fully on my school team, finishing the season strong. We have a very good team this year, despite being labelled as the underdogs in most of our matches. We’re turning a lot of heads with our results.”

Western Province begins their quest to Coca-Cola Craven Week glory with a warm-up game against Boland in the next few weeks.
