Grade R learners in Kensington are enjoying some gifts generated in the month of love, February.

WD Hendricks Primary School welcomed a group of WNS Global Services SA, a call centre in Century City that employs people from Factreton and Kensington, among other places, on Tuesday 7 March.

In February each year, to celebrate the month of love, the company runs a month-long campaign aimed at showing their employees that the company values them and their families and communities.

The campaign lets employees apply for small-scale help in the form of groceries, school stationery and clothing for their extended family and greater community.

This is where Shermer Pretorius’s love for her father Mervyn Leedenberg came to the fore.

Pretorius, an IT program analyst at the company, nominated her father, who is the pastor of AFM Church in 10th Avenue, Kensington, that was established in 1939.

“My father does volunteer work at the school and does regular visits at the school to counsel, impart some positive attributes to the kids and at times join in with their daily games during interval,” she says.

“My nomination of him is because I constantly see his love for the kids and his passion to uplift the community in any way possible.”

Leedenberg grew up in Factreton and works at the oldest church in Kensington and Factreton.

With the help of some of her colleagues, Megan Meredith and Anrika Coetsee, Pretorius was able to give each of the learners in Grade R a stationery pack that included a pencil bag, two pencils, two pens, a sharpener, eraser and crayons on behalf of her father.
