Zizwe United, log leader of the ABC Motsepe Western Cape league, were held to a 1-1 draw against Glendene United FC in a penultimate second round encounter in Philippi on Sunday.

The result was enough for Zizwe to claim the league trophy on goal difference even after it failed to secure an outright victory.

Top goal scorer for the season, Mpho Erusmus, with 30 goals, scored for Zizwe. The hosts were nervous and failed to concentrate, which allowed the visitors to dominate the game at times. Craig Martin levelled matters for Glendene after the hosts were already in a celebratory mood.

The promotional playoffs that will be played at a later date will determine whether Zizwe will promoted to the national first division (NFD).

National first divisionStanley Muishond scored a hat trick for Stellenbosch as the team secured a 4-0 victory against Mthatha Bucks at Athlone Stadium in a crucial NFD encounter on Saturday.

The hosts were in full force from the start of the game and were determined to clinch the league trophy, despite being 10 log points behind leader Thanda Royal Zulu.

Should Stellenbosch win the trophy, it will have an opportunity to play in the PSL and be the third Cape Town-based team to feature in the prestigious league next season. Should the team hang onto its current position, it will qualify for the PSL promotional playoffs which will be played once both the PSL and NFD have concluded.

Former Bafana Bafana midfielder Edries Burton is the current chief operations officer of the Winelands team and he is optimistic that his team will be promoted.

A defensive blunder from the visitors gave an own goal away after they crumbled under the Stellenbosch attack.

The other Cape Town teams in the NFD league are in a dog fight to steady their respective positions.

Cape Town All Stars (12th with five matches left), FC Cape Town (13th with four matches left), Milano United (14th with four matches left) and Santos (16th with four matches left) are locked in a relegation dog fight.
