Glenthorn A’s and Falcons dished up a perfect match for the many spectators at the softball knockout finals at Turfhall on Sunday.

In the main fixture of the day, A’s clinched the super league knockout title with a close 10-9 victory over Falcons. They now have the double season title after winning the league title last week.

A’s took advantage of the sloppy defence by Falcons in the early stages of the game and rushed into an early lead.

Falcons’ never-say-die attitude paid dividends when they pulled level in the fifth inning (8-8). But powerful batting by the A’s came to the fore again when Cindy Davids batted in Courtney Stevens in the sixth inning to clinch the win.

The men’s major league final was also a tense encounter when Hamiltons beat a luckless Pirates 3-2. Lloyd Stevens, on the pitching rubber for Hamiltons, conceded only two hits from the 24 batters he faced. Stevens also proved his worth with the bat (2-2) but it was the evergreen Luke Jacobs who put the ball over the fence for the solitary home run to clinch the game. Pirates’ pitcher Levan Jacobs faced 29 batters, giving up seven hits.

The women’s major league delivered the upset of the day when Heideveld Yankees defeated the unbeaten Lavender Hill 2-1. The game was a tense affair throughout with both pitchers, Grivonne Rhoda (Lavender Hill) and Chaunees Goliath (Heideveld Yankees), keeping a tight rein on the batters.

As the game was poised for a tie-breaker, a sacrifice bunt by Tasneema Arendse scored Aaliyah Thomas to send the crowd into a frenzy.
