Agricultural activities are on the cards for Acre Road in Facreton.

The Facreton Community Development Organisation (Facdo) have seen the need for a sustainable food garden in the area.

Now they’re taking the first steps in making their dream a reality.

A group of volunteers from the organisation have just completed training to start such a garden from scratch and are now raring to get their project underway.

Ricardo van Niekerk, from Facdo, explains that they were part of a group of 50 trainees from various areas who took part in the training.

“We were all so eager to learn and it was the most joyous feeling to plant our first beetroots,” he says.

“This training will help us uplift our environment and grow our own food because many households cannot afford it with their low income.

“If you do not have money, you don’t have access to basic human needs, in this context, access to food.

“We were very motivated and now we need to set up our own garden and get more people trained to start their own gardens.”

Van Niekerk adds that they have more plans for the open field in Acre Road.

“There is so much space here that’s wasted and just used as a dumping ground.

“We have already started cleaning up the area we want for the food garden, but we also have a multi-purpose playground in mind where children can play safely.”

V The organisation welcomes donations to assist with establishing their garden. For more information call Ricardo on 061 660 8306 or email Facdo7405@gmail.com.
