Young and budding entrepreneurs now have a place to go for help and guidance on their doorsteps.

This comes after the South African Business Resources Institute (SABRI) a non-profit company, opened their doors at the Alliance Francaise Building in Wall Street, Portlands.

The company has created significant socio-economic impact on the Cape Flats since its inception in 2011, through a hands-on approach to entrepreneurial development focusing on women and the youth.

“Our programmes seek to develop beneficiaries to either set up and grow their own businesses, or provide skills training programmes that enhances their chances of employability. SABRI’s services are available to the business community of Mitchell’s Plain, particularly to women, the youth and disabled and people who have or who want to set up business cooperatives,” says Lynn Maggott, SABRI CEO.

The organisation has set up two social enterprises as a revenue stream to sustain operations aimed at the community.

“We achieve this by partnering with eligible entrepreneurs who operate and own shares in the business. To date we have set up SABRI Recycled Furniture where redundant furniture is refurbished and sold to start-up businesses or non-profit organisations. Another business is SABRI Venue and Event Hire, we hire crockery, cutlery and supplies required for events and our spacious venue is available for both business and social events,” says Maggott.

To access services, residents would either need to have a business idea or they would be existing business owners who need business services, such as accounting, bookkeeping and budgeting services, business registration, vat and income tax registration, BBBEE certificates, business plans and marketing strategies as well as website and logo design.

The organisation already has two existing offices in Hanover Park and Manenberg and the Mitchell’s Plain Office is their third.

“Unemployment in Mitchell’s Plain is in excess of 50% and our research indicates that there are limited services to assist the community to set up and develop their businesses. We believe that assisting business owners to set up and operate sustainable businesses will create the much needed jobs and, to some extent, contribute positively towards reducing unemployment,” says Maggott.

The objective of opening the centre is to bring services to the existing and start up business community.

“Our centre is ideally situated at a transport junction adjacent to the train line and taxi rank in Portlands, so our clients will not need to travel, which can be costly particularly if you’re unemployed. At present most services available for emerging entrepreneurs is based in the City centre, so instead of spending money and time in an attempt to access those services, they can come to the centre,” says Maggott.

The services have been available since Monday 3 October when the organisation moved to the building.
