Help police track down shop robbers

2017-06-06 06:01

Police are searching for men linked to a business robbery at a shop in Sixth Avenue in Belgravia Estate on Thursday.

According to Athlone police spokesperson Sergeant Zita Norman, the shop had just opened with customers streaming in when two unknown men approached a 39-year-old employee.

Norman says that the one robber grabbed her right arm and directed her to the cash office.

He put his firearm to her stomach while the other robber made his way to the manager’s office, Norman says.

“They instructed the manager and the woman to open the safe in the cash office. They took R47 000 in cash and fled the scene. No shots were fired, no injuries were sustained,” Norman confirms.

No-one has been arrested for the robbery yet.

Colonel Mark Adonis, Athlone Police Station commander, is requesting anyone with information on this robbery to come forward.

He also asks members of local neighbourhood watches to be vigilant whilst patrolling in their respective areas.

“Street and court committees, we appeal to you to be actively involved in the continuous fight against crime,” he says.

Adonis also encourages use of the police’s reward system: “This system allows any adult member of the community to become proactively involved in the prevention of crime. Crime and criminals can be reported and a reward could be received by the reporter.”

Anyone with information on crime can call the police at Crime Stop on 0860 010 111.
