Help with safety app

2016-03-22 06:00

Techies across the province are being invited to be part of developing an app to help make public spaces safer.

The idea for the application was triggered by Ryan O’Connor, radio show host of KFM, following the spate of brutal murders of teenagers in Cape Town.

O’Connor appealed to IT specialists to work together on a solution that could track people using public spaces and share this information with their loved ones.

Sham Moodliar and Elizabeth Senger of Hamba Safe were approached by O’Connor and arranged a 48-hour hack-a-thon this past weekend.

People from all walks of life – cyclists, runners, hikers, developers, testers – were invited to be part of the development.

“We certainly heard Ryan’s plea and based on what’s happened over the last few weeks we felt that we needed to do something to help,” explained Senger.

The hack-a-thon took place at Workshop 17 at the V&A Waterfront from Friday to Sunday.

Moodliar said this was the first time that an app of this nature would be developed for this purpose.

He is confident that it can be done with the help of volunteers.

“This is about all communities. You might know nothing about tech but you can come forward and help with the user experience. Everyone can help in some way.”
