The organisers of the Green Light community project in Garden Village are on a mission to empower unemployed residents this year.

After celebrating the project’s fifth anniversary in December last year they are more determined to make a difference in the community, explains chairperson Ronell Trout.

“We have come a long way in five years but there is still a need for growth,” she says. “One of our main activities that we want to expand is our home-care project where we want to help underprivileged people with skills. Our aim is to give them a skill so that they can support their families or help them finish their schooling if they were not able to. We’re looking at restoring their self-esteem and even help them get a skill with which they can start their own business.”

She adds they are still looking for sponsors or support to sustain these projects.

“We need donations or sponsors for equipment like welding machines, sewing machines and overlockers,” she says.

“There is also a need for fabric and materials, garden tools as well as offers from people who can teach various crafts and skills. We also call on organisations like schools, clinics and businesses – even private homes – who need help with cleaning services in the home or in the garden. We have trustworthy people to assist in a variety of activities.”
