Learners at Holy Cross High School in Maitland are part of a global fight against tuberculosis (TB).

On Tuesday 3 May they hosted some exciting activities at the school as part of the We Beat TB project in conjunction with the Western Cape Department of Health, USAID TB Care II SA and members of the USA Congress.

Alice van Zyl, provincial coordinator of the project, explains this was one of many initiatives to raise awareness about TB at various school in the peninsula and surrounding areas.

“The activation process started when the learners were registered in their different classes while receiving a USAID TB Care II “We Beat TB” T-shirt,” she says.

“From there the learners went to the activation truck where they received key rings and We Beat TB school bags.

“Different role-players of the project entertained the children with music, dancing and health promotion on TB and HIV topics. This was an interactive session and the learners participated in sharing the information they received from the role-players.”

TB screening was also done according the USAID TB Care II SA screening tool for adults and children and the project will follow-up the identified TB presumptives through the principal and according the school protocol.
