Killarney kart track revving up for explosive racing

2016-08-23 06:00

Killarney’s kart track is famous for two things – it delivers South African champions par excellence at a regular pace and you can rest assured that the racing there will always be explosive.

Saturday will be no different when the Cape’s finest will be out to fight over the sixth round of the WP championship.

Cape Town delivered two 2016 South African karting champions and both will be out to add WP titles to those national gongs, but both were beaten to second last time out and both intend to fight back in round six.

SA championship runner-up, Sebastian Boyd from Camps Bay will also be in action.

Open class SA Max Challenge 125cc champion Dino Stermin (Designer Trims RKT Kosmic) had to do with being beaten by Stellenbosch lad Delano Fowler (Suprocom WOrr FA) last time out and now he wants to make amends. That won’t be easy as Philadelphia Polo Cup racer Umpie Swart (CRG) wants to beat both of them, and don’t discount Marco Joos and ever-improving class regulars Nicholas Jacobs and Arnold du Toit.

Cape Town’s other 2016 South African karting champion, Charl Visser (Battery Energy RKT Kosmic) likewise had to give best to Troy Dolinschek (Makita Kosmic) in the primary school Maxterino 60cc class at the last Killarney race as Troy took his first ever overall primary victory in the absence of championship protagonist Joseph Oelz (Zanardi).

Visser still leads the Maxter title chase, but Oelz will be back; Dolinschek is hell bent on winning again and never discount Tate Bishop (Kosmic), Kai Van Zijl (CRG) Jason MacBeath (Zanardi) and younger Visser brother Kyle (Zanardi).

The Western Province high school Junior Max 125cc championship is probably among the hardest-fought classes in SA motorsport right now, but Durbanville’s runaway championship leader Jason Coetzee (RKT Kosmic) is keen to once again escape the commotion and repeat his triple victory of the previous meeting. Sebastian Boyd (Boyd Boss Freight Kosmic) is first in line to prevent that, closely followed by the fiery Dario Busi (Automan CRG), Daniel Duminy (SMG Kosmic), Andrew Rackstraw (TonyKart), Aidan Strydom (TurboTech CRG) and JP Hamman (Hammanshof Kosmic), all of whom are well capable of winning races.

Two measly points are all that split WP DD2 title rivals Jonathan Thomas (Partners Hair CRG) and Julian van der Watt (RKT Kosmic) at the head of the WP DD2 title chase following Julian taking a clean sweep of wins last time out, while Tristan de Nobrega (Race Driver SA CRG) is ready to interfere with that tussle at any opportunity, while Aidan Hughes, Christopher Vrettos and Conor Hughes will all be in the picture too.

The baby Cadet class may cater for u.8 kids, but never let that confuse you – this is not child’s play and the racing is deadly serious. Championship leader Paul Malcolm (Fast-Oil/Charl Electric) will be out to make amends for a disappointing meeting last time out, which allowed Joaquin de Oliveira to close his title advantage down to six points.

. Racing starts around 11:00. The Killarney raceway is on Potsdam Road across the way from Killarney Gardens, Milnerton and the kart track is on the infield across the way from the main circuit pit complex. Refreshments are available at the Clubhouse. There is always great race commentary and a brisk atmosphere in the pits, ideal for a good Saturday out. Entry is R60 per adult, R20 for u.16s and u.12s are free.
