A Muizenberg High School learner has been commended for his bravery after he leapt to the aid of a fellow learner.

At a special assembly recently, Jody van Leeve was awarded a certificate from local police and the school after he intervened when he saw Widaad Sadan being robbed on Tuesday 18 April while leaving the schoolgrounds.

The robber used his two dogs to attack Widaad during the robbery, explains Muizenberg High teacher Peter Petersen.

Jody saw the attack and immediately jumped to Widaad’s defence, he says.

“Jody rushed to the scene and took the schoolbag away from the [robber]. The man then fled,” he says.

Jody says intervening to help Widaad was instinctual.

“I felt sad and [mad] at the man. She was hurt and bruised and I just raced to help her. She’s my friend and she needed help; the dogs could do serious harm to her. I am taught to help my neighbour and that just kicked in,” he says.

Widaad was bitten on her legs by the dogs and has been recovering at home, Petersen explains.

“She was terrified and extremely traumatised. She was grateful that Jody intervened,” he says.

“Muizenberg High is extremely proud of Jody. He received a gold certificate for bravery which was awarded to him by Constable Davin Lotriet in the school assembly. Present at this assembly were Jody’s parents and Widaad’s grandmother and aunt, as well as two representatives of the police. In an emotional moment for the whole school, Widaad’s aunt handed Jody a gift parcel as a token of their gratitude.

“Jody has definitely shown his peer group what real bravery could be.”
