LETTER: Let’s come together

2017-01-31 06:01

The Western Cape dam levels continue to drop week by week. The latest report on combined dam levels for the Western Cape water supply system shows they are below 40%.

Some Western Cape municipalities, including the City of Cape Town, have imposed water restrictions to curb excessive water use amid diminishing dam levels.

It is sad that despite these interventions there is non-adherence to water restrictions by some water users. These unacceptable practices include:

. Use of hosepipes when washing cars and watering gardens.

. Use of sprinklers when irrigating with potable water.

. Unattended burst pipes which lead to water and sewage flowing in the streets.

. Reckless usage of water by businesses engaging in car wash activities.

As the Department of Water and Sanitation we appeal to all water users to assist the government by adhering to water restrictions as this will assist to curb water use to ensure a sustainable water supply.

We would like to express gratitude to the water users and sectors who have acted in a responsible manner by complying to the restrictions.

Let’s all come together in condemning water wastage in particular during this drought period.

Malusi Ravi Department of Water and Sanitation, Bellville
