Life is more than budgets

2017-02-07 06:01

It is always very sad when the community loses a child because of driving in residential areas at high speed.

About a year ago, a child still enjoying what was left of a Sunday, was knocked by a speeding car in the notorious Royal Road in Maitland. The impact was so severe that his body was flung across the road and landed under the front bumper of another car.

What saddens me a year later is that trucks and cars still speed down Royal Road even though council laid speed bumps along Royal Road. One can actually hear how both trucks and cars gear up to speed from one speed bump to the next.

Council needs to erect “no trucks” signs in Voortekker Road at the beginning of Camden, Spencer and Suffolk streets and all roads parallel to these streets, as well as the corner of Station and Royal roads.

To further curb speedsters, a permanent speed camera should be installed in Royal Road at Mountain View flats and traffic officers should also be more visible in Royal Road.

When will human life take precedence over council budgets and politics?
