Local schools keep perfect pass rate

2016-01-12 06:00

Local schools maintained their 100% matric pass rate from previous years.

They include Bishops, Claremont High School, Rustenberg Girls’ High School, St George’s Grammar School, Vista Nova School, Westerford High School, Herschel Girls’ School and Rondebosch High School.

However, provincial education minister Debbie Schäfer says it is important to ensure the quality of passes.

“Given the many challenges our education system faces, improving the quality of education is only possible through sustained interventions in our schools and the hard work of the matrics, their teachers and district officials. It is a multi-year process.

“We are pleased that this effort is reaping results,” she says.

There is also growth in the number of candidates writing and passing Mathematics and Physical Science in the province.

Last year a record number of almost 13 000 matriculants passed Mathematics, compared to 11 000 in 2014. The pass rate was 74.9%.

In Physical Science, the numbers passing increased from 11 000 in 2014 to 12 000. Physical Science candidates achieved a 73.3% pass rate.

Emphasis is also placed on ensuring pupils stay in school for as long as possible.

“We are very encouraged by the improvement in our rate of retention over the past five years. Last year the Western Cape yet again managed to increase our retention rate from 63.8% in 2014 to 66.8%,” she says.
